Introduction Paragraph for magazine article

The following paragraph I have written as an idea to introduce my magazine article.

With a deafening debute album just released, tour dates lined up and constant buzz from the media - metal folks, such as yourself, around the UK are certainly in for a treat when it comes down to this bunch o' screaming, hairy hooligans! There are simply just too many aspects about these guys I could ramble on about to you but I'll get to that later. With sold-out headline shows on their UK tour, you simply would be daft to miss the chance to get to see them. "Why should I see them?" you ask? Well read on and find out for yourself!

Colour College Magazine Cover

Here is my finished College Magazine cover.

 The Deyes High Newsletter is very basic and generally plain. I find this is due to the lack of colour and the fairly symmetrical layout of the cover. The image at the top of the cover is a pencil drawn image which shows the cover is very dated for today's modern society - this, however, will be a bit more appealing to students parents - giving the school a more professional and well educated image. The use of "Comic Sans" font on the "Newsletter 2 December 2010" is a very unprofessional-looking part of the cover, the font is rather tacky and doesn't fit well with the rest of the cover.

The St Ambrose Barlow newsletter cover uses colour which is instantly noticeable compared to the Deyes cover. There are also many other features of a magazine cover which are incorporated in this cover such as; Pugs, Puffs, Headline etc. This cover looks more like an article page though as it has the main story and the contents on the front. Use of a "Redtop" masthead has also been used on this which is very eye-catching and professional looking (Redtops are used in other magazines/newspapers such as; The Sun, The Mirror, Hello!, OK!, etc.) Once again, there is use of the "Comic sans" font which makes the whole cover look unprofessional. As opposed to the pencil drawn image on the Deyes cover, this uses 4-colour images cropped to fit in with the anchorage well which is a lot more professional.

Cohen's Moral Panic

Moral Panic - "a condition, episode, person or group of persons emerges as a threat to societal values and interests".

The features of this Moral Panic are:

• Concern - the behaviour of a particular group of people is portrayed as a threat
• Disproportionality - over exaggeration of evidence
• Volatility - the situation erupts dramatically
• Hostility - "Folk devils" are created to cause a diversion (e.g "Youths" or "Hoodies")
• Consensus - widespread acceptance of the created threat

Stanley Cohen wrote a book about moral panic in the media and society ("Folk Devils and Moral Panics") and gained public intrest in his theory of this. Pete Doherty is a prime example of the Moral Panic due to his drug and alcohol driven lifestyle. The media would try to make society think that he was 'poisoning' young people and causing them to act like him in order to lead a similar lifestyle.

Laura Mulvey's Feminist Theory

Laura Mulvey's Feminist theory is based around her idea of "The Male Gaze" - a patriarchy which is a form of society ruled by men through the figure of father (the patriarch) to whom all others are subordinate.


Through this she mentions the two ways audiences look at films:

• Voyeuristically
• Fetishistically

Voyeurism and Fetishism

Mulvey's theory states also, that the voyeurism involves turning the figure on screen into a "fetish" so that they become increasingly beautiful but more objectified. 

Fetishism leads to a cult of movie stars, who are celebrated for their looks in favour for their acting skills and they are considered as an object -Marilyn Monroe, of which, being a good example of this. Because of "The Male Gaze", women and men now seem to have expected roles within movies

The theory states that cinema audiences watch a film without being wanted by the characters on screen, and we usually watch them in a darkened cinema so the characters do not know that they're being watched. Therefore, we are almost like voyeurs watching the people on screen. This can lead to two effects:

• Objectivisim - Objectifying female characters in relation to "The Male Gaze".
• Narcissistic Identification - having an ideal image on screen, meaning that we want to be like the characters in the film.

The Typical Roles of Men and Women in Conventional Films

Most Hollywood films have a male protagonist, a.k.a. the lead role, in the narrative and target a male audience because of this. The male characters are often not very attractive yet have the main roles and are the most active in the film. On the other hand, actresses in films normally support the lead roles (the main female actress being the "Bond Girl" in James Bond films are a good example of this) and these actresses are almost always very attractive and glamorous.

Introduction to Coursework

I have been asked to create a front cover, contents, double page spread for a music magazine of a genre of my choice.  For my research for this coursework I must; analyse two music magazine front covers, two contents pages and 2 double page spreads, all of which in my chosen genre, so I can see similar aspects used for my target audience. Before creating this I first need to complete my preliminary task; to analse a college magazine and create a mock front cover of one, a mock-up of a contents page for it and then justify my choices. Also before creating my magazine pages, I must make mock-up versions of a front cover, contents and double page spread along with doing photoshop practices and mock shots.

I must create a mood board on my chosen genre for further research along with creating a production schedule. I must get venue release forms for where I take the photographs of the band and take risk assessments.
