Magazine Ideoloy

Magazine Ideology is a system of beliefs, values or ideas that is common amongst a specific group of people.
The Ideology of the magazine 'Kerrang' is the genre of music 'Alternative' also containing some hard rock, indie and mainstream metal and could be considered for people who like to 'Break the mould' and appear unique to themselves.

The ideology for my magazine will me heavy metal, showing the less mainstream bands/sub genres of metal that are considered less popular.

Semniotic Theory

The semniotic theory is the theory that our brains react to 3 different signs; sign > signifier > signified. This theory was brought about by a man called Saussure.

An example of his theory could be;
Rain > Depressing music > Sadness.
Sign > Signifier > Signified.

I have decided to use Heavy Metal as the genre for my music magazine. As I have chosen this, I will follow the semniotic theory by using a suitable colour scheme of black, grey and orange.

Quantitive or Qualitive data?

For my AS media coursework I have been asked to decide whether I'll be using either 'Quantitive' or 'Qualitive' data for my research.

Within Quantitive research you gain as much information as possible by using questionnaires and surveys etc. This method of collecting data can make your work a lot less reliable and give your work an obvious 'simplistic' feel to it, giving it a very low standard. Within Qualitive research, the data collected is very in-depth and detailed on the topic at hand. The use of interviews and case studies is vital in this method of research.

Both of these forms of research can't be entirely reliable sources of information so a high amount of trust is required on the subjects at hand. However, I feel that for the coursework task given - it being a music magazine, I believe that Qualitive data would be far more suitable for the reader as the use of interviews and case studies would be far more interesting to the reader(s).
